Clip It Up Knockoff

Clip It Up Knockoff

The Clip It Up is a huge hit with Scrapbookers for hanging up stickers,

embellishments and more, and to have them at our fingertips.

Here is the original Clip It Up version. Looks nice right?
The price and design itself are not for everyone, though.

www.clipitup.com

After getting some great inspiration from other Scrapbookers,
I came up with my own Clip It Up knockoff.

What you need to make it:

* Curtain rod or similar
* Binder rings
* Paper clamps

I personally like this better than the actual Clip It Up because I can put it
wherever I want, store longer items, and reinforce it if I have heavier items like chipboard.

It’s an excellent resource to be able to quickly see and grab the items I need without slowing down my Scrapbooking. If you have the wall space, it’s well worth putting one together.

Technique Sunday- Video and photo cds

Technique Sunday

Video and photo cds

I am always looking for ways to put more photos and interactive elements on a layout. By making my own burned cds with my computer, I can add all my extra photos and video clips and put them in a cd pocket on the page.

Merry Christmas Harry Potter layout

The cd here is hidden in a pocket behind the photo, and ribbon is wrapped around it so you can pull it out.

Different viewpoints

Different viewpoints

An interesting layout is to take photos from an event and have yourself and your spouse both do journaling about it and put it on the page. It’s always interesting reading what you wrote later on. Example:

On this layout I have a hidden flag where we both wrote our viewpoints on the trip.

Technique Sunday- Mosaic

Technique Sunday

I have decided to focus on separate techniques on Technique Sundays.

First up:

Mosaic layouts

Doing a Mosaic Layout, despite how it looks, is very fun and easy.

Basic instructions:

1. Make a photo mat at least 2 square inches bigger than your photo size
2. Turn your photo over and measure it out evenly. One inch per box for example

3. Write numbers on the back of each box

4. Cut out the numbers with a cutting tool so they are straight

5. Line up the boxes numerically on your photo mat (make sure its not upside down or reversed, otherwise you may not see the photo properly)
6. Using a ruler, glue down each box leaving a small gap

Here are some examples:

Flower layout

Close Ups

Usually you will not see a Mosiac Layout using portr
ait photos, because it doesn’t blend well; however, it still can be done and look neat as per below.

10 Ways To Save Money Scrapbooking

10 Ways To Save Money Scrapbooking

Here are some tips I have collected over the years to help save you some of your hard cearned scrapabooking dollars.

1. Go to the dollar store

This goes without saying, but be sure to keep your eye out for unconventional things that you would not find in the scrapbook isle. For example: buttons, felt, wine charms, flower petals, photo books, tissue paper, paper money, playing cards, or fabric from scarves that can be used on a layout.

Example layout: On this layout I used paper money found at the dollar store.

2. Use the wrappings

Literally. When I get a gift that has something nice attached to it that has scrapbooking potential, I keep it. A pair of pajamas tied with a nice ribbon, or a pair of jeans with a silver tag clasp, for example.

3. Cheap storage

Look for storage at places like thrift stores, or make your own. To easily make a magazine holder or regular size paper holder, cut out a cereal box. I found instructions here:

http://www.allfreecrafts.com/recycling-crafts/magazine-holder.shtml

Example: Here is a utensil holder that I now use to store my pens:

Example: I created this eyelet and brad storage from a shower rack along with some containers, all from the dollar store. Cost: about $7-8.

4. Bottlecaps

Make your own, don’t buy the expensive packages. With a pair of pliers I twisted the ends to make it flatter, then I painted them. From there you can use stickers or embellishments on top. This costs next to nothing compared to a retail one.

Example:

5. Use paint

Use acrylic paints to change the look of the scrapbook papers you already have. A nice white tones down darker shades, and puts more emphasis on the layout itself.

Example: On this snow layout, white paint is used to create a snowy look, while dark blue paint is used to tone down a hat background.

6. Slide mounts

Instead of buying a few for a lot of money, try searching camera stores for them. I also find eBay a great resource for a big box of white ones. Then you can decorate them to your taste.

Example: Slide mounts used to highlight smaller photos.

7. Fun Foam

Use Fun Foam to make your elements pop out of the page instead of expensive glue dots.

Example: Fun Foam was used under the letters that spell Gavin, to make them stand out.

8. Photo developing

When you average out the cost to print using most high quality printers at home, it’s a lot more money than getting your prints developed. Save your color printer for tweaking your layouts with small pictures, but otherwise send in your prints to be developed. I prefer Costco, which has great developing prices and excellent quality.

9. Using scraps

Use scraps for cards, titles, photo corners and color blocking. For the more adventurous, put them in a blender and make your own paper. Here is a how-to article:

http://www.kidsgardening.com/growingideas/projects/nov02/pg1.html

10. Make it personal

Make it personal If you use personal things on your scrapbook pages, there will be less need to spend money on fancy embellishments. Save your ticket stubs and get a brochure when you go to an event or visit an attraction. If you go to a wedding keep the program, your name tag or other paper products and use them on your pages.

Example: On this racetrack layout, I saved our ticket stubs and a brochure and put them in a hidden pocket behind the photos.

** Please note that not all items may be acid free. You can buy a pen to test the acidity.

Scrapin confession time

Scrapin confession time

I don’t shop at the LSS.

Please don’t shoot me yet! I have tried, really I have. There is just something about walking into a store and having an owner’s eyes on me while doing my shopping that makes me cringe. “Are you going to buy something? Well are ya? Are ya?”

There is so much talk online about LSS’ closing, which in part seems to want to make people like me feel guilty. The fact of life is that businesses flop, even when you have an organized business and a good plan. Its hard to open any business, much less a scrapbook store, which unlike a dollar store does not have a massive amount of people flocking to it.

Not that I wish LSS owners any bad luck at all; of course, the more competition the better. It’s great that they love this hobby, but
I don’t want to feel guilty that I choose not to shop at their store.

Admittedly it’s may be my misconception; however, if someone wants to feel comfortable shopping, can you begrudge them that? Well perhaps you could, so I apologize to all LSS owners, but between the prices and those eyes, I will not be seeing you again anytime soon.

Scrapbooking- biased against the male sex?

Scrapbooking- biased against the male sex?

I have not met any heterosexual men who will admit they actually scrapbook. Sure, they will use our scrapbook “tools” and may even create a page for their wife in order to show us they can, but will they really admit it to their guy friends at the garage?

Thus, I have to take a look at the number of guy scrapbookers posting online on message boards. Would you call them in-the-closet male scrapbookers? Or are they there trying to pick up women?

Are woman considered biased against a man, if he actually likes scrapbooking, and labels him as effeminate? Women do not have an ownership of scrapbooking, so I appeal to any hetorosexual guy who is confident enough in his sexuality, and likes scrapbooking, to come forward and let me know you are out there (though please provide proof with a layout or two so we no longer question your intentions.)

Scrapbooking without children

Scrapbooking without children - Is it possible?

There is a misconception that all scrapbookers seem to be women who have children, stay at home and have too much time on their hands. Firstly, everyone is entitled to do what they want with their free time, so I don’t see why stay-at-home mothers cannot as well. I digress, as I am not a stay at home mom.

Actually, I am not a mom at all, thus I break this scrapbooking stereotype. I am not out to have children anytime soon to justify my love of scrapbooking. Though the children’s pages are cute and endearing, I love being able to have the freedom with both time and content to scrapbook more about myself and my family.

Once upon a time in the scrapbooking community, a scrapbooker without kids was rare; now, we have begun rising out the woodwork and are ever expanding within the scrapbooking world. Please raise your hand and be proud to be a childless scrapbooker. Who wants to make the bumper stickers?

Scrapbook Room and Storage

Welcome to Scrapin n more

Scrapin= Scrapbooking

For those of you who wandered onto my blog and wanted to know where you ended up…

To all the Scrapbookers out there: Welcome! I hope to share my tips for scrapbooking and
add a dose of inspiration.

My scrapbook room and organizational tools:

This bar height desk was made using two hutches from two different desks, then we attached a large piece of wood. It works great and has tons of storage options.

This is a great organization arrangement for papers, stickers etc. It’s a modified version of Clip It Up using a curtain rod, binder rings and large paper clips. It’s very convenient having everything at your finger tips.

The paper storage is made from cubes tied with zip ties. Easily adjustable, they can be put vertically or horizontally.

This is an antique shelf I found that is great for storing stamps.

Eyelet and brad storage. This was made from a show rack and containers from the dollar
store. It’s a great cheap storage option.
