Technique Sunday- Ribbon

Technique Sunday

Ribbon

Using ribbon adds a fun and textured element to any layout. You can use it as a background, wrap embellishments around it, use it on tags and more. The possibilities with ribbon are endless.

Examples:

Ribbon is used across the bottom of the photograph as a separation in the page.

Swamp layout

Ribbon is used here on the tags to draw the readers focus to my journaling.

A fancy gold ribbon is layed accross this photo to add a bit of glimmer.

Christmas

I also really enjoy embelishing ribbon, inking it, and using sand paper to create different effects. Have fun creating.

Technique Sunday- Magic Mesh

Technique Sunday

Magic Mesh

Magic mesh is a great element to focus on a part of your layout. It works great for beach layouts to mimic netting, or on tags. Personally I only like it in small amounts, but you can really have fun embellishing it.

You can purchase magic mesh at the scrapbook store, or I have been told drywall tape works as well. I would be careful regarding acidity with drywall tape though.

I like how versatile magic mesh is. You can sand it, ink it, paint it or tear it to create different effects. You can get it in multiple colors in order to co-ordinate it with your layout as well.

Examples:

On this layout, magic mesh is used on the tag as an embellishment, and behind the photograph.

You came into my life

The title in this layout is backed with magic mesh to highlight it.

Technique Sunday- Using fabric

Technique Sunday

Using Fabric

Fabric adds a nice dimension and texture to a layout. I really love the look, as it adds softness to a page that you can't get with paper.

Exampes:

On this layout lace is layed accross the top for the title.

Chantal and Russell Wedding

On this layout I cut up an old pair of jeans and layed it on the bottom of the layout.

Technique Sunday- Hidden journaling

Technique Sunday

Hidden Journaling

Hidden journaling is an effective technique when you want the focus to be on your photographs and not your journaling.

You can add interactive elements with hidden journaling and other photographs. It’s also a great way to hide journaling that is more personal that you do not want everyone who sees your albums to read.

In this layout there is a library pocket that hides journaling and additional photographs.

Speed

In this layout the page flips open to reveal additional photographs and journaling.

Red Pine

In this layout Hinges are used over the photograph and journaling is hidden behind it. There is also a tag that has been made with velum and inked over to add more privacy.

Technique Sunday- Paper glaze

Technique Sunday

Paper glaze

Paper glaze is a transparent type of glue that is great for creating texture, glass effects, water marks, or adding depth to embellishments and titles.

Its normally comes in a fine tipped bottle, like the one pictured above, that makes it easy to apply. I recommend leaving it to dry overnight.

The title was sanded, covered in ink and overlayed with paper glaze.

Wreath

In this layout water was casually drapped around the title for a watery effect

Vellum with text overlay

Vellum with text overlay

On this layout I took dog traits, breeds and characteristics. I then selected two words that I wanted to stand out and made them larger sizes.  I set the printer to the transparency setting in order to print it out without smearing. The same theory could be used with any event.

Technique Sunday- Vellum

Technique Sunday

Vellum

What is Vellum?

Vellum is a transparent scrapbook paper that comes in multiple colors.

What can it be used for?

Vellum is great for journaling on top of your paper, creating tags, envelopes and more.

How does it attach to my page?

The challenge with vellum is attaching it so that you cannot see your adhesive.

There are multiple ways including these:

Brads
Eyelets
Vellum Adhesive
Put under a piece of patterned paper
Put under a piece of fabric
Photo corners
Flowers
Staples
Xyron machine
Ribbon

Examples:

Velum is used here with ribbon to create a pocket.

If I won the Lottery

On this layout the journaling is printed on the vellum. It was attached using eyelets

Technique Sunday- Photo Collages

Technique Sunday

Photo Collages

A photo collage is a great way to utilize more of your photographs on
a layout.

Photo collages are very effective in a two page layout because you can
put your main focal point on the first page, and also document additional
photos of the event.

In this example the immediate family was done on the first page, while
the next page was dedicated to those in attendance and the reception.
The collage was numbered and indexed on the bottom so that the reader
will know who is in each photograph.

Technique Sunday- Acrylic Paint

Technique Sunday

Acrylic Paint

Acrylic paints are an econimical way to add texture, camoflauge flaws and tone down bright hues to make your layouts flow and blend together better.

Using paint is by far one of my favorite techniques because of how verstatile it is.

Paint white wash

By using acrylic paint you can tone down a racy background that might overwhelm your photographs.

Example: By using blue paint on a hat patterned paper background, it tones it down but still allows the picture to come through.

Sliding Fun Layout

White paint is also great to create texture.

Example: On this layout white paint is used to create a snowy effect on the paper and tag.
